I also have a Digital Debel XT. I use a Tamron 70-300mm lens. I also have a manual focus 500mm lens with a 2x converter to make 1000mm. Using a teleconverter is the cheaper way to go. Though, it's two more lens surfaces to keep absolutely clean. You'll probably get comparable results for most applications. If you have the dough, buy a 200-400 lens. I recommend Tamron to save $$$ from expensive Canon lenses.

Do not buy 2x converter. It is known as poor rating. The 1.5x converter will give you the sharpness result. But if you have money, buy 200-400.
