This is probably going to sound crazy but can dogs tell what breeds other dogs are? My two year old male jack russel is the most loveable thing in the world, gets on great with other dogs, but hates spaniels. All kinds of spaniel, even spaniel cross breeds. He can spot one a mile off and is actively aggressive towards them. How does he know?? As far as I know he has never had a bad experience with one, so why??!

It's either a coincidence that he just happens to dislike dogs who happen to be spaniels, or he's had a specific bad experience with a spaniel-type dog. That happens sometimes. Or, it could be something deeper than you realize, like maybe he doesn't like same-sex dogs (common of Jack Russell terriers), and all the spaniels he meets happen to be male.

My jack russell does the same thing but with rotweilers, and west highland terriers. Again no bad experiences. He absolutely adores another jack russell though.

i have a jack russel, she hates all dogs, except for our other dog and she is older then the jr. i have never heard of dogs being mean towards certain breds. you need the dog whisper.

well...i know that spaniels like to be the center of attention! mine did and every time that I played or was with another animal she hated me for a few days and she was really mean to the other animals that i had!
