SoundPost is correct. The "download accelerator"s do not speed up the downloads. However, if your ISP server is not powerful enough, or your downloads are usually broken, then they will help you get your downloads continuosly at maximum possible limit. I myself use Download Accelerator Plus, which is free and very easy to use. It efficiently integrates into IE, Mozilla Firefox and Opera.

depends whether you want a very high speed then you should only download the one and the only program that i have used so far for 2 years and works VERY fine with me:
FLASHGET
its a little bit hard to find and download because its just too good!
no viruses,clear version and very fast..

What I have found is that all d free ones r more or less the same. They all come with Ads. U can buy any 1,i guess that wud be better.
