I'm not sure if you mean for performance reasons or an 'opera appreciation' type of class. It's very interesting. It has such a long history and the styles are so varied. I think you can come to really marvel at opera singers actually do. Give it a try.

Unsure if you mean class as in a course at a college or university, or if you mean the lectures that music directors sometimes give before an opera.

I've never taken either, unfortunately; the opera literature course at my University is only offered every other year and I missed it. I think if you are interested in music or opera you should attend; it won't hdo anything but give you insight into the composer, characters, settings and so on. I STILL would like to take an opera appreciation course!

I attended opera worskshop for voice majors but I was a composer observing for one semester. Basically, I got to sit there and watch talented students learn how to perform opera. Aside from very basic vocal instruction (they get that in their one-on-one lessons) they learned how to move while singing, how to express, how to have dialog with a partner etc... It was one of the best classes I took.
