All hotels in England are far more expensive than their European counterparts, this is one of the reasons why so many people take holidays abroad. British hoteliers are ripping off tourists and subsequently harming their own interests. I will agree that prices and taxes are higher here than elsewhere in Europe but not enough to make the difference that hotels seem to demand. I suppose that we are all in the wrong for letting them get away with it.
You might like to look at hotels which cater mainly for business users, these do offer realistic prices at weekends when their main clientele do not use them, but of course these are usually out of main tourist areas and resorts.
My advice is forget Cornwall and the Newquay hotels, head for somewhere cheaper and get a bonus with some sunshine.

Yep, forget Newquay. It used to be alright a few years ago but like many seaside places in this country it's gone right downhill as the cost of going there has gone right up! It's expensive, crap and trashy. My friend stayed there and the only hotel he could afford was squalid and expensive with pervasive smell of vomit to it. It was like a holiday in a sewer. Newquay's like Blackpool but without the class. Think of all the people you'd cross the street to avoid at home and then imagine them following you away on holiday. Even the Cornish avoid it. You'll most likely find the very worst type of person there and the very worst type of places. The rest of Cormwall is entirely different though, so don't let Newquay taint the county. However from NI you'll spend a true fortune.

A much better idea - take a Continental Flight to New York direct from Belfast for the price it'd cost you going to Newquay!

Have you tried staying in a b&b instead of a hotel? Try using Smooth Hound Systems http://www.smoothhound.co.uk/ as it is directory of b&b's around the country.
