I have windows xp pro, but I already installed it on one computer. I need os for another computer. I have windows xp home key, can I use it to activate xp pro? does cd key tell microsoft that it is cd key for xp home?

if it doesn't, does work if it is the same version? like installing win xp home with xp home key from other place?

yes the cd key wont work but heres what you can do (NOT MICROSOFT COA U NEED TO LIE). Ok well install another xp pro you can use the same cd key. When u activate windows tell them that you are reinstalling xp because you are about to upgrade to vista. they will actavate you no problem and you are good 2 go.

If you have an xp home key you can copy an xp home disc and use the key. Copying the cd is legal, you can make as many backup copies you want of the windows disc. The key (or license) is what you aren't allowed to duplicate.

Of course the key would not work!! That would be like someone using a cheap windows 95 key to get Vista activated would not work!!

no u can not use a xp home key on a xp pro disk and yes they key will tell microsoft if your using home , pro ,or corporate edition
