i recommend trying divx or xvid doesnt matter what.

if it is a downloaded movie it will most likely be divx compressed.

There are many codecs that you'll need to download and install onto your machine to watch the file in your usual Video Playing software (Windows Media Player, Real Player, etc)

Best solution for simply viewing the files; download VLC (VideoLan Movie player) its free, completely standalone and doesn't need excessive external codecs being installed. It'll also play pretty much ANYTHING!

Install the right codec. Most of the AVI files are DivX or XviD encoded. If the decoder is missing these files won't play.

just as all the others said youll need to install some codecs, if you download this pack http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ACE_Mega_CoDecS_Pack.htm and install it, it should solve your problems, if not try the vlc player it plays almost anything!
