No metaphysical problem is more vigorously discussed by
the present day psychologists than that of mind and
body. Most of us assume that all thinking takes place
in the brain. It is only since a few decades that
psychologists are treating body and mind as a single
unit called psycho-somatic system. This led to the
development of new subjects like Psycho-biology and
Psycho-neuro-immunology. Modern medicine has recognized
the brain-spine system as a single unit, but it does
not assign thinking functions to any part of the spine.
It is now known that even when a considerable amount of
brain is removed through surgery, a person can still
have reasonable mental abilities and can lead a near
normal life. Modern research found that one region in
brain can perform several tasks and so can compensate
for the loss of damage of another region. On the
contrary, surgical removal of some 'safe' parts from
womb of women is known to cause problems of mind like
dementia. Then, what are the components of mind and
where are they located?

Indians put their hand on the chest when they say "I am
saying this from the depths of my Manas". Manas
(rational mind) is a common word used in India, and no
one shows his head when he uses that word. The
Europeans have an esoteric tradition that mind exists
independently of the physical brain, and thoughts
become known to a person through the brain. During
the 1970s, neurologists became increasingly
dissatisfied with the epiphenomenalism theories of
mind and brain. More scientists came to suspect that
mind and brain were different in a kind and could
interact.

"Our two minds .... One is an act of the emotional
mind, the other of the rational mind. In a very real
sense we have two minds, one that thinks and one that
feels" (Daniel Goleman, Emotional Intelligence,
Bloomsbury Publishing, London, 1996, page 8). This
rational mind is also called the faculty of logic and
reason.

The Upanishads speak of five components of mind.
Thet are located on the spince. The brain is the seat
of memory and knowledge.

In the study of army veterans with spinal-cord
injuries, researchers found that they can become
emotional but they do not feel it - they do not have
the bodily heat that they used to have before the
injuries.

The body is like a machine and heart is like a engine and the soul is the passenger in the machine. Therefore when somebody says the heart takes decisions or it is very kind etc... it is actually the spirit soul which is acting.

Below is the purport to Bhagavad-gita(2.17) by A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada,Founder-Acharya of ISKCON
(International Society for Krishna Consciousness)

The influence of the atomic soul can be spread all over a particular body. According to the Mundaka Upanisad, this atomic soul is situated in the heart of every living entity, and because the measurement of the atomic soul is beyond the power of appreciation of the material scientists, some of them assert foolishly that there is no soul. The individual atomic soul is definitely there in the heart along with the Supersoul, and thus all the energies of bodily movement are emanating from this part of the body. The corpuscles which carry the oxygen from the lungs gather energy from the soul. When the soul passes away from this position, the activity of the blood, generating fusion, ceases. Medical science accepts the importance of the red corpuscles, but it cannot ascertain that the source of the energy is the soul. Medical science, however, does admit that the heart is the seat of all energies of the body.

Such atomic particles of the spirit whole are compared to the sunshine molecules. In the sunshine there are innumerable radiant molecules. Similarly, the fragmental parts of the Supreme Lord are atomic sparks of the rays of the Supreme Lord, called by the name prabha, or superior energy. So whether one follows Vedic knowledge or modern science, one cannot deny the existence of the spirit soul in the body, and the science of the soul is explicitly described in the Bhagavad-gita by the Personality of Godhead Himself.

It is true that the heart does not make decisions,it is the brain. However, since the brain is a very Static organ like the chip of a computer it is considered to be emotionless, lifeless as against the heart which is beating all the time and it's Beat varies according to the decisions taken and emotions thus emitted.
So you have the heart beating faster when excited/frightened and slower when resigned to one's fate etc,etc,etc.......
Thus, though the emotions and their subsequent effects occur in the brain, it is the Beating Heart which makes it obvious to humans and so over the years it has come to be associated making the important decisions like the Monitor of a computer which produces the Results (dynamic) from the data fed to the hardware (static).

There is one minute heart within the physical heart that we have. The physical heart is the machine for pumping and receiving blood.

The minute heart does the mental functions, like attachments and loving , hating etc.

The heart does not take decisions. It follows the decisions taken by the mind. Most of the times it appeals to the mind to take a particular decision, but once a decision has been taken by mind, the heart will have to obey it!

The heart does pump blood - however - in Scripture the heart refers to the whole person. It says that it is deceitful above all else- then it also says, that we are to love the Lord our God with all of our heart. Someone who has a kind heart, means they are compassionate. So the heart really is what the person is- either deceitful or a heart that has been saved to do good. Does that help at all?

There are two things Mind and Heart. Mind can guide you according to your will, whereas, if you refer anything to your heart it will give the correct decision about good / bad / anything. Heart is the place of God. The lub-dub/pumping sound which you hear from your heart is Prana/God/sign of living soul. Once the soul leaves the body, pumping stops, declares as dead. So Heart will give you correct advise. If you do correct things naturally you will be a good/correct person.

There is one thing --MIND-- It is --It can do --- thinking --- with the consent of the brain--nerves system--it can make a decisions-- mind cannot be seen -- just like we cannot see the air/ wind but we can feel--so it is human nature that we should have an object which can be seen or touch for each and everything--So we connect mind to heart--or to say we see the mind in the name of heart

You are talking of physical heart. There is another physically unseen heart, the centre of energy and feelings, centrally situated at about one inch below the last rib of the chest. I will make it easy for you. We all experience this centre when we feel uneasiness or vomiting. In fact all our decisions come from this centre in the form of intuition like order from a boss and mind is like a servant. Usually very few realize this reality. I am sure you are enlightened now. I wish Paramaatmaa protect you.

"Vishw Paramaatmaa Parivaar".

I agree with primoa. He seems to know the bible. He is right. The heart is wicked most times unless you let God lead you. But the reason people say it is just figure of speech. It's really your mind but it sounds better to say "the heart"
