Nine U.S. soldiers were killed in two bomb attacks north of Baghdad, the military said on Tuesday, in the deadliest day for U.S. forces since they launched a security crackdown in the capital three weeks ago.

Commanders had warned that militants may launch assaults outside Baghdad, where more than 90,000 Iraqi and U.S. troops have intensified operations to rein in sectarian violence.

In the worst of Monday's two attacks against U.S. forces, six soldiers were killed and three were wounded by a blast near their vehicles in Salahaddin province, a Sunni Arab insurgent stronghold north of Baghdad. Three more were killed North of the city. The troops in the area said the rag tag insurgents are well armed and fight like there is no tomorrow and that makes the USA military think twice before they enter certain parts of the city. Most feel this will end up like another Vietnam.

Hey Erudite--
Why are we ( USA ) doing so well and wonderful in Iraq ?
It all boils down to the view you have
those who see this as they want to see it
and those that see it as it is

The well and wonderful crowd (you can catch a number of their posts here on this question) are still convinced that we are "getting somewhere" with what is going on --- can almost TASTE victory at times !!!
While those of us that see this as a "fighting windmills thing" can not see the "well and wonderful" in much of any of it !!

The thing here is---what is the end game---how and when do we win ? I have heard hundreds of scenarios tossed about and YET no clear, definable, tangible Win Point !! There IS NO centralized enemy to beat down and bring to an agreement !! There IS NO hope of a stable central government there because all of the people that are in the current government are so devided by factional hatreds and centuries long blood feuds that they will NEVER be a true independant and Solid Stabilized Core that we keep hearing about ----EVER !! The people that we are fighting there are imports into the country just like we are---they will keep "shipping them in into infinity" from all sectors of the globe for as long as it takes into infanatum !!! All the time dragging the debt load on future Americans into an abyss that we will NEVER recover from !!!
Of course we ARE making Haliburton filthy rich and I'm sure that the Cheney Trust Fund is not suffering much over all the Billions running throught those accounts over these last few years---and a lot of Iraqi's are getting new homes at USA taxpayer expense while veterans of OTHER wars live on the streets !! So, I guess we ARE helping SOMEONE's U S economics in certain ways!!

And, as far as this "ending up like another Vietnam"---- This IS this generation's Vietnam !! Junior was told as much going in and it didn't matter--- and it still doesn't---he still gets weekends off at the Ranch--- and has said on many occasions of late that the polls about the subject really don't matter to him (in other words -- he doesn't really CARE what people think here !! At all !!)

I hate saying this, over and over.but War is not healthy for living things. That said, we are WINNING, even though the Liberals and Media refuse to tell the truth to the people. The only things we hear are Bombs, Explosions, Death, Body counts, and more negative things. This so reminds me of the VietNam Media of the 60s.
Try broadening your horizons, look at my links, if you dare. You will see an awful lot of good and positive things that take place every day in Iraq. Good things the Cowardly Liberals and Media won't admit to.
This Liberal thing is making me sick. Support the President..Support the Administration. Support the Troops and their effort. I'm sick of Liberals making this country look bad. America is the best and the greatest....
There are lots of vacancies in Iraq, you could all move there and live happily ever after with your Terrorist Brethern.
VICTORY IS THE ONLY WAY TO END THIS WAR!!!

This just in: "Troops in the area report that he insurgents seem to be wearing Michael Moore tee shirts."

See? I can generate my own news reports, too.

Or how about this? "The insurgents kill 9 out of 90,000 Iraqi and U.S. troops. Obviously we should surrender immediately!", Commanders said.

Or

Troops report that these guys don't play fair and we want our mommies!

Who do you think you are fooling with your propaganda? We know that the bulk of Iraq is under control and doing quite well. We also know that the insurgents are being systematical restricted to smaller and smaller areas of influence. It is going well. Our troops are patriotic heros and you are not.

We're not doing jack to improve Iraq in my opinion. They keep trying to "put the smack down" on civilian towns and out pops resistance. I doubt everything you've read and quoted is true, since I see so many different versions of the same exact story every day.
There was never a plan and there still isn't a plan. Our military is bad to the bone and get it done. Tell them to do it, and it's done.
Maybe it's best to watch the news with your fingers in your ears humming.

There is only one way to win wars against insurgency, said best by Kurtz in Apocalypse Now,

"Horror. Horror has a face...And you must make a friend of horror. Horror and moral terror are your friends. If they are not, then they are enemies to be feared. They are truly enemies."

We are already there and it would be better to finish the job than to leave and have someone worse than hussein take over. I know a lot of people do not believe the job can be finished, but if the troops are given the equipment and support they need, then goals can be accomplished. My heart goes out to the families that lost loved ones. We lost people from his battery when my husband was in Iraq and it is never an easy thing.

Because of political correctness. With the awesome power that the USA has at its fingertips, we are afraid to use it and make a stand for what is truly right. We fight a woosie politically correct war where our soldiers are handcuffed and need permission and justification to get the job done.

The stupid liberals think we need the support and approval of the world. You cannot win a war with all these things that tie one hand of the military behind its back.

Cause the top has NO idea what they are doing (as they didn't from the start) and are continuing on that path by just throwing money at it without thought! Well good luck!
