I'm at a red light, needing to make a right turn into a three lane road.

There is a green arrow opposite me for people to turn into a three lane road.

I see no cars in my lane and make the right turn and notice that the Suburban coming towards me went straight into the far right lane, the one I was turning into.

Now wasn't that Suburban supposed to go to the far left lane and gradually blink into the right lane?

What is the law of this.

The reason I'm asking is because she was so angry at me, thinking I was in her lane she almost ran me into the gutter!

actually traffic laws state that when turning either right or left onto a street you are required to turn into the immediate lane and then merge over once the lane you want to be in is clear. In this case she was wrong as she made a left and instead of turning or staying in the left lane, she merged to the far right. You on the other hand being at a red light must anticipate or better off assume that anyone making the left turn could as she did just turn into any lane they choose.

If that Suburban was turning on a green arrow, YOU were wrong.
Where I live, you can turn into any of the three lanes on a green arrow. It is often "recommended" that you turn into only the first lane, mainly for the reason you described.

Hey degaree, before I start, I wanted to say that I am glade you chose one of my responses to your question about your friend and the man problems.

Now, to your question, If you had a sign that read "NO RIGHT TURN ON RED", then you were both wrong and if there was no sign, than she is still wrong do to the law of turning to the 1st lane when entering multiple lanes and gradually merging to the next lane with a signal light (3 second notice) to prevent accidents from happening.

Excellent Question!!!

Sincerely,
SuperDave

When you make a turn, you are supposed to stay in the lane that you initiate the turn from, so she should have stayed in the left most lane until she could change safely after tuning (she was in the wrong). Unfortunately, many drivers change lanes while turning (this will eventually get them into trouble. We will have to continue driving defensively and taking verbal abuse from these people who didn't remember their driving rules.

Honey YOU have the right of way. Of course, don't expect the Suburban's driver to agree with you.

HE was supposed to turn into his own late. You're absolutely correct, and the law (if you can prove he did this) will be on your side.

I have learned not to expect people to do what they're supposed to, so I don't make a right until all the cars have finished turning for the very same reason of what happened to you.

You had the right of way.. no mistake about it!

Good Luck!

The green arrow has the right of way. In you're position you are the one that is supposed to yield to the opposing lane.

If they had the green arrow they had the right of way and you should have waited for the road to be clear before going. Legally speaking. Of course, the other driver really made a bigger deal out of it than it was. The other driver could have easily avoided you without any trouble...but if there was an accident you would have been at fault.

Look, our american problem with the road system is all about wanting a vehicle for some duration to ride, ride ride and ride down the highway to and through hell, with all the signs written on the wall, vehicles are all nothing but accidents, toll bridges, subtle and dangerous air pollution, talking on cell phones while driving getting in more deadly accidents, and driving under the influence of drugs, alcohol and reality of gridlock, traffic tickets, and woe is me!!! So, in my case, I'll place myself in your shoes with this question, "Who Has The Right of Way? NO ONE because everyone is watching out for themselves, that's why you have all these problems with all those vans, cars, trucks, .R.V.'s and whatever rolls on rubber or steel wheels out there on our deadly and death defying highways. So, ride the bus like me, I love that O.C.T.D. I just pay at the door, sit down and let the bus driver take me where I want to go and let him worry about all of those crazy drivers out there who are just waiting to get a ticket or in a wreck!!!!!!!!

When you make turn on red, you are supposed to yeild to all traffic and pedestrians. To everybody. Sorry, but this is the only way how turn on red can work safely

Just assume the other guy has the right of way. You'll get into fewer wrecks that way.
