Security checks for liquids started because British intelligence had stumbled upon a plot by terrorists to use liquid explosives in airplanes late last year.
They shared this information with the United States and both coutnries were the first to ban liquids in planes.

The current security on liquids and gels started because the UK government uncovered a plot by terrorist to explode certain aircraft that were heading to the United States. They have become a little more lax on the regulations as now you are allowed to bring limited amounts of liquids and gels, were right after the arrests were made there were no liquids, etc.. allowed on board the aircraft.

The fact that there are some very powerful liquid explosives out there that could easily be used to blow up a plane.

UK muslims planning to blow up a plane or planes with liquid explosives, so we loose another bit of freedom because of these evil people.
