i have lived in southern italy for a year now and 90% of the people in the village i live in keep their own animals - pigs, sheep, chickens, and rabbits- and slaughter them and butcher them them selves... there are no huge factory slaughterhouses where i live..i f people wish to buy meat they go to the local butcher who will source his meat locally. therefore asuring good quality meat..
and the children will help the family make sausages or cutlets or skin the rabbits, the children understand where food comes from not like in britain where kids think food comes from tesco
when i lived in the uk i worked in a lamb abbatoir which is one of the largest in europe, capable of killing 7000 lambs a day.. now that's a lot of animals but these come from all over the country creating alsorts of problems with disease, remember foot and mouth...
unfortunatly i didn't see the program you are referring to as i don't get the bbc, but i can give you some advise.. don't buy your meat from a supermarket, it is the supermarkets that are shaping the food processing industry, not only with meat but salads and veg... buy your products from your local butcher, greengrocer or market... then you are assured of quality and of it being local produce and not travelling probaly all around the british isles to get to your plate
people need to stop being lazy, wash your own salad walk into town to the butchers or grrengrocers instead of driving to tesco....

Just because it has been done for years does not mean it is not cruel. In fact, it is more cruel today than ever. Just as you said, you probably wouldnt eat meat if you had to catch it, kill it, butcher it and dispose of it yourself. The argument that most people have that we are "designed" to eat meat is preposterous. If that were the case, we would be equiped with the ability to hunt down our prey, kill it with fangs and claws, and use sharp claw like teeth to rip the flesh from the bones. The fact is, we have two incisor teeth, for splitting the flesh of fruits or veggies, and a mouthfull of flat teeth designed to masticate foods, just as all other vegeratian animals do. Instead, we were given an imposable thumb, to be used to gather fruits and vegetable. Man is obviously more suited to vegetable gardening than hunting and killing animals-the only way man can do it is with tools-thats not natural. Yes, we are intelligent enough to employ these methods, but the facts is that all creatures are given the tools they need to exist. If meat was not readily available, you likely wouldnt eat it.

There are other freeview channels and I'm really sorry it that it upset you! I am a vegan and have not eaten meat for ages. At least it got people thinking about meat. The real process is miles away from those little hygienic supermarket packages that come out in the end . I don't expect anyone to think the same as I do or even but I used to 'lie ' to myself about where meat came from. And one day I found that I could no longer kid myself.

I've seen a few questions on this subject now and some of the answers really amaze me... I can't believe people think they have some right to not be told what they're spending their money on. That logic is like hiring a hit man and saying "yeah but I didn't kill him myself, so what's the problem? And how dare you try and show me the video footage?"
Honestly I have no qualms with most meat eaters, they know the deal and they can live with that, like yourself Mick (though I think we have differing definitions of what makes something cruel, but whatever) but these people who think it's nothing to do with them as long as no one ever tells them about it are just idiots.

Didn't watch it but get the jist, don't think I would give up eating meat although I don't like to ever hear or see animals suffer. I know certain animals are bred for eating and that's just part of life. Hopefully they don't know what's ahead of them and that while they are alive they are happy and do not suffer in the end. Sadly we do not live in an ideal world.

ignored the first one yet said 1/2 of the only very last evening (it truly is on somewhat overdue for me!!) The presenter particularly did something similar on the 'food coach' many years again. He went right into a field and chosen a cow, toook it to the abatoir and watched it being killed and dressed and then sat right down to eat it. He cried as he ate the first piece. Vrey interesting, very transferring. i have self belief all animals could manage to run round and characteristic an finished existence (besides the undeniable fact that short the existence is) How we've develop right into a u . s . the position battery chickens etc is proper is ideas boggling. i could quite pay more suitable for organic and organic meat and in reality manage to manage to pay for to eat it once a week than pay peanuts for battery farmed garbage that i could manage to pay for to eat on a daily basis.

I saw the programme and it was very interesting and gory to watch. I will still eat meat, it has not deterred me but I will probably think about eating more organic meat from now on.
When you think about it animals die every second for food and it's not just humans that kill them but animals kill each other as well, it's just the circle life. It has happened for centuries and it will keep happening long after we're not here anymore....

if we were designed to be vegetarian then our teeth would have been shaped differently for chewing vegetables.
Animals are a source of food and I'm sure that if our prehistoric ancestors only eat vegetables or fruit then they would not have survived the ice-age.
I agree that in this modern age there is no need to kill animals for fur but it is a necessary part of human evolution to eat meat.
I have worked in a slaughter house and have seen the practises first hand the animals are treated with respect before they are slaughtered in a way which does not cause any unnecessary pain

It did not put me off as it was a dignified and calm way that they slaughtered the cows. They did not make a show of it, they just went about their business. If meat is raised and slaughtered in that manner then it is not cruel in my eyes.
