I was wondering what people think when they talk to someone with a stutter?

My grandson stutters. I am patient and just listen. As with most people who stutters, he does not stutter when he is singing so sometimes when it is bad he will sing what he is saying and we laugh. Most children start to stutter around the age of 3. It is just the brain working faster than the mouth and we have been know to say " stop, think about what you are trying to say, then just say it." Believe it or not, it works a lot of the time.

I feel kinda bad sometimes because of the time it takes for them to say something, because of that awkwardness I finish what their saying if I feel like they are having an extra hard time with it and I know what they are trying to say. I really hope it's not rude...but I usually see a face of relief when I do it. I am a server at a hotel and have to take orders from people with stutters.

Conversations with someone who stutters can be frustrating. My granddaughter stuttered for over a year and it was difficult not to finish a sentence for her. Patience is key! Generally, someone who stutters will have a more difficult time if they are excited. Calm conversation and patience is important. I tried to never be impatient. It is something they can't help and over time symptoms usually improve in children.

I hope they get help like my uncles and cousins did through the Stuttering Foundation at www.stutteringhelp.org.
