Genetics play a role, but don't make you mentally ill on their own. There's an enviromental aspect. Your depression doesn't mean that you'll develop bipolar disorder or that you'll go crazy. Most people who suffer from depression even clinical depression are mentally ill for awhile, but eventually find their way back to mental health. Get some help for your depression. You're not crazy. Try therapy and life style changes first and if you get desperate go for the meds. Remember, the chemical imbalance that is ever so talked about could very well be a result of the depressive thinking and behaviour. No one knows which comes first and if it's the thinking and behaviour that occurs first, that doesn't mean it's not genetic or even biological. There is very little that we actually know and understand about the human brain and as it relates to genetics and 'who we are' and how we suffer. Good luck!

Some mental health disorders are genetic, others are not. If you are feeling depressed, you might want to seek out a psychiatrist or psychologist.

The days when your aunt was institutionalized was very different than it is today. Your aunt may have been institutionalized by your uncle. At that time, a person didn't need a diagnosis or a true mental health problem like so many people think. All that was needed was a man to want to put her there. Then once instututionalized, the doctor could make a diagnosis upon his/her findings and if they couldn't come up with one, the term schizophrenia was used. And once someone got labeled with this term, it was nearly impossible to get it changed. At the time your aunt was institutionalized, Manic Depression was rarely used as a diagnosis. Things are much much better today. But there is still room for improvement.

Some mental health problems, particularly Bipolar / manic depressive are hereditary, so there could be a genetic link. That said, it just MAY make you more LIKELY to get Bipolar, it isn't OBLIGATORY, you do not HAVE TO get it.
There is a chance that you chould be turning it into a self fullfilling prophesy - you think you SHOULD be bipolar, so you behave like it - you do this without realising it, so it's not your fault.
However, the best course of action is to see a doctor, so you can get diagnosed IF NECESSARY, and get any treatment you may need

Some forms of bipolar disorders have a genetic predisposition. You need to see a psychiatrist to find out. Manic Depressive disorder is usually the result of a biochemical dysfunction in the neurochemical system related to moods and sleep cycles.

Through my knowledge of people, it is possible that mental sickness can happen through genes. But depression can happen to anyone. It does not mean that you can get crazy just because someone has been sick mentally in your family. I have a friend whose mother is mentally ill and her sister is in depression, too. But she is perfectly OK. My advice for you is to keep up being positive about yourself. Pray!

It is partly to do with Genes. It is a chemical imbalance and can be treated. You also have to treat yourself. If you accept and give in to your problems then they have concjured you. Dont stress though. If you feel that you have a problem talk to your family and to your doctor. Life is full of tests, it is all on how we deal with them. You can do anything you put your mind to, You might need help to do it, but you get that much more credit for asking for it. Good luck and Good health to you.

Having parents with mental disorders does make a child much more likely of having them as well, but there is speculation to whether these disorders are genetically inherited or whether they are learned as we introject our parents values and quirks. If it's genes, then seeing a psychiatrist and going on prescription meds would be the best approach at dealing with it. If it's learned, then seeing a therapist is best and figuring out more about yourself and how to relearn healthier thought processes.

Good Luck!

I know that one well, yes it is genetic,my oldest girl has paranoid schizophrenia and now my youngest girl is going through this terrible torture of mental illness too,an uncle killed himself at only 31 years old and I have servere depression,so my family is very disfunctional too,but please dont focus too much on your family's mental illness try to just keep yourself as well as you can otherwise it will wear you down it helps me just to keep a diary of my feelings .

Some cases are genes related some are not. Why not consult a phsychiatris or phsycologist to better diagnose your problem. Hope it will be alright.
