I had the same problem with my daughter. Our issue was I was giving her a little too much juice. Juice, not milk, causes diarrhea in a lot of young children. Maintaining a healthy balance of milk, juice, and water is the best way. I would try cutting down to about one cup of milk until it's under control, then slowly raise it back up to a happy medium.
If he doesn't drink much juice, it's possible he has a little bug that needs a doctors attention (if it's going away and coming back on his own).
To help with the diarrhea, Pedialyte definitely helps.

It is probably just a virus. Make sure that he drinks lots of liquid and try not to feed him too much dairy products. Try rice and bananas and breads. They say that the cultures in yogurt helps also. Hope he feels better.

Is it possible that he has a food allergy or is maybe lactose intolerant? Take him to the doctor but keep a log of what he eats and when he gets sick. That should enable you to narrow down the cause. Hope your baby feels better!

you should call the pediatrician.
small kids can get dehydrated easily, and it could become fatal. even with out a fever. you might want to consider what he's been eating too. if it's a lot of fruit, cut back, because they are natural laxatives.

A young child can become dehydrated very quickly and it can be very dangerous. I suggest you see your pediatrician as soon as possible.
In the meantime, keep the child well hydrated with products such as Pedialyte, juices and water until you can see the doctor.
