Young animals (pretty much all but humans) eat an adults poo to get good bacteria in their system to help digest their own food. As for eating other animal's poo, it is a tasty treat (they don't see it as gross). Our dogs (both adults) do not eat dog poo, but they will eat horse poop balls all the time, they think it is a lot of fun.

Many puppies eat poo, and it's called coprophagia. There has not been a definitive reason to why it occurs. Some reasons may be boredom, nutritional deficiencies but a likely scenario is that poop resembles the semi-regurgitated food that mom dog would give her puppies as additional supplement. In addition, mommy dogs in the wild eat their puppies' poo to prevent potential predators from detecting them.

Some people use remedies like hot sauce and meat tenderizer to sprinkle on poo to make it inedible. However, I found the best thing was to pick up the poo as soon as possible as well as keep your puppy on a short leash so that you can pull him away from mystery poos on your walk.

The majority of the time, puppies outgrow this yucky habit. Just make sure he doesn't lick you after snacking!

This likely partially harkens back to the dog's wild ancestors. Moms ate their pups' stool in order to keep the den safe - the smell of stool would alert rivals and predators. Once the pups were older and had better control and more life experience, they would eliminate away from the den, so no need to eat stool.

Dogs now mostly eat stool because they are trying to keep their space clean, because they have a nutritional deficiency, or because it smells and tastes good.

Our puppy will chew on her own poo and will go into the horse pen and eat the horses poo. It might be there is something missing from ther diet, boredom, or any number of reason.
