A passport is a must.

You should only drink bottled water.

Watch what foods you eat as a salad washed in unsanitary water can make you sick. Some places wash it with bottled water for your safety.

Anything may happen in any country. But as I work in a large international hospital in Bangkok I would say that illness and accidents can strike at any moment and certainly without warning.
I can not stress strongly enough the need for a good medical insurance cover that will take care of any and all medical expenses, will provide for an air evacuation from a remote or unstuitable destination to a place of safety and will cover repatriation to your home country.
The cover also also include life insurance and the repatriation of your mortal remains.
Believe me it is worth taking time to look at all the options and not take the one that the travel agent or tour operator is offering as this may be insufficient for your needs.
Go to an insurance company or broker.

stomach illness can come from travel to another city much less another country. different drinking water standards and chemicals can cause diahrea and other stomach problems. so i suggest imodium ad and also see your doctor about some medicine for stomach viruses incase you get a bad case. and only drink bottled water with a sure seal on the cap. some countries water standards are far below what is healthy for us in the states.

constapation is also common it happend to me when went to southeast asia. all the rice and only drinking bottled water to limit my risk of sickness combinded for a binded up stomach. so consider a laxative as well.

money is always needed but more so in an emergency maybe carry an extra credit card with a limit enough to buy airfare or travel expenses or even to replace your funds in the event you are robbed or loose your baggage. i suggest signing up online with western union. put your bank info as a payment method and then you can access it anywhere internet is availible and pick up the needed cash at any western union which are almost everywhere on earth.

under clothes are important as sizes in some countries differ so pack plenty of those and less of the other clothing cause most places you can buy for less.

those are just a few tips i learned in my recent travels hope you enjoy i may add more as i think of them later when go through my trip in my mind.

Bring money and all will be well. Medical insurance in case a bus hits you could be helpful. Make sure you watch out for malaria and such in places prone to it.
