I have just bought a Canon Eos 300 SLR (film). It is second-hand and I have just got it home to find that the view through the viewfinder is blurred, and almost as if the glass is 'smoked', with everything taking on a slightly sepia tone.

Is this normal? If not, what can I do? I am an absolute beginner so have no idea what is normal. I would be devastated if the camera is a dud as I've just got it after saving for months.

Thanks

I suggest that you visually inspect the camera, starting with the lens. Does it look normal when it is removed and as you look through it and at the lens surfaces. Do you notice any coloration or anything untoward?
Next check the mirror carefully. Any abnormality? It should be very clean. Use a torchlight if necessary. Then look at the Fresnel lens on the prism. Any problems there? Then lastly, the eyepiece.
If you spot any growth or discolouration, you may try some good lens cleaning solution and lens cleaner. But be careful as you can easily do damage.
The sepia tint is bad news. It could be due to some long-term smoke deposit. If that is the case, you have been sold a dud. But it depends on whether it is on the lens or the body itself. If the lens is good, you may still get good pictures because the light will not be affected although the view is. If it is the lens, you may be able to buy another second-hand one later. Hopefully, you didn't pay too much for this one.

i could say digital! First if you're asking this question, you're literally not a professional. digital is far more good value on the getting to understand curve. I particularly have a marvelous little Cannon digital SLR and prefer it. As to the commonly used, the common man or woman won't be able to tell the distinction contained in the prints. also my interior sight digicam keep informed me that Kodak is fixing to tug out of the movie market, i imagine we are able to assert it truly is the starting up of the top. some will wrestle it, yet like information and cassette tapes, movie cameras will be a issue of the previous for the common man or woman. BTW in case you make certain you want a common SLR, i will promote you my previous one. Works only effective, the in reality issue I hated became utilizing movie. ;-)

The blurring probably can be fix with Diopter adjustment.
If the Eye piece on the viewfinder is "brown" contact Canon (man I hate that word!) maybe they will have a replacement piece

Is the lens in focus? Does it have autofocus? Does it have a dial near the viewfinder? Adjust the dial so things appear in focus. Its purpose is to help people with near or far sightedness. Cleaning the lens with a cleaning kit is also a good idea.

have you tried just cleaning the view finder with a cloth? if that doesn't work, then try an independent camera shop and see if it's something that needs professional cleaning.
don't take it to jessops or anywhere like that as they'll charge you and arm and a leg just to look at it! if you go to a proper camera shop (perhaps where you bought it if you got it from a shop) and it's something simple, they should be able to fix it right there and then.

hi, I'm sorry to tell you thins, but i think it's not "normal". there's must be something wrong to the lens inside. i think it's better for you to check it to the camera shop.
