I got a new puppy recently, the problem is my kitten hates him. She actually swatted at him, getting him in the eye, causing him to have secondary laucoma (punctured the eyeball, causing all the fluid to go behind his eye) he should be fine, is on tons of meds, and will probably have cataracts later in life (thankfully no surgery needed, but man the cost of emergancy pet care is outragous)
Now my question is, how can I introduce them, and without having to have them seperated all the time? I love them both, I do not want to get rid of either of them, and I dont feel declawing a cat is humane. Help?

The puppy is a lhasa apso, he isnt much bigger than the kitten, I dont think the cat feels physically threatened, more jelous that the dog is takin her mom away.

They'll get used to each other eventually. Be sure to keep a close watch on them when they are allowed in the same room. I'd introduce them slowly. Let you cat out and keep your puppy on leash with you. you can walk over to your cat with your leashed puppy. The cat will feel slightly more comfortable with you right there and you can keep the puppy under control and out of claw range. Introduce them a couple of times like this. They may never be cuddle buddies or friends, but they can learn to tolerate each other.

Don't force it, first off. I agree about the baby gate. We have 2 dogs and 6 cats, and we use a gate. It offers the cats sanctuary, if they choose it. Pet the puppy, get it's scent on your hands, then let the cat smell you. And vice versa.

Nika, my alpha cat, was 4 when we got the pups (now going on 3 years), and Tangerine was just over a year. Tangy now sleeps with the pups and Nika, well- she makes use of the gate but at least she's stopped growling.

What breed is your pup? If it is a breed that will be bigger than the cat, then you need'nt woory in a few months...you may have the reverse problem.

Seperate the pup and cat. Until the pup can better defend itself. You do not need to de-claw...a cat can't be trained, and he was fully justified in what she did.

Go to Wal-mart and by some baby gates for the doorways....this will also help in your training for the dog to know where he is allowed to go in the house....and you can better monitor is exploration.

This is a trying time for you. The cat and dog may never be 'friends', but they will eventually learn to be tolerant of one another.

Get a baby gate and block off a hallway or room that the cat can get to but not the dog. This way the cat has an escape (safe place). Your cat feels threatened by the pup, it's nature! They will learn to live together.

It takes time for cats and dogs to find an acceptable common ground sometimes. I have some ideas that might help on my website. burdicklabradors.com helpful links page under training;
I had a pup and 5 cats 15 years ago my son now 25 wanted me to have the dog wear a helmit and goggles.

De-clawing the cat is not all that bad, as long as it stays inside and does not have to defend it's self. Try using an old spray bottle filled with water, and squirting the cat when it try slapping at you puppy. You'll need a bottle that shoots a straight stream.

I think you probably mean GLAUCOMA. Anyway, the only way to get the 2 pets to get along is the monitor them when they are together and if you can't then separate them
