Dodge Caliber is supposedly a Small Crossover vehicle, and it looks like a really small SUV, but I wonder if it really is any more spacious than a Toyota Corolla. Is it safer (accident wise). Maybe Ford Escape is better... I'm looking for a medium family vehicle that is not a van and it's about the same price as a Toyota Corolla. Comments please.

I would pick the CAliber. It has the highest possible saftey ratings, and the Corolla was on Forbes list of least-safe vehicles with a rating of "poor" by NHSTA. Check out this link, it has tons of reasons of why not to buy a Toyota. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AplK5J9OWzsD9VzZlSOIXg7sy6IX?qid=20070301210328AAn8E5d

Toyota Caliber

I have spent the time researching all three, so you can benefit from my experience.
The Toyota Corolla Sedan is the bench mark for small sedans. Roomy, economical, long lasting, and pricey. The lowest price I could get in my area with the features I needed was $22,350.
The Ford Escape was roomy, got acceptable mileage and was even more expensive at $24,700.
The Dodge Caliber was roomy, well appointed, had plenty of power with the standard 2.2 engine, got reasonable mileage and was ready to go with everything I wanted for $19,200.
Now for the punch line....
I did not buy any of them and bought a Ford F350 SuperDuty Crew cab 4x4 for fifty grand....Go figure?

If you want more space than a corolla, a toyota matrix is a corolla with wagon/suv styling. The hatch is much more practical than the corolla's tiny trunk. The caliber just isn't as well made as the corolla or matrix. The gas mileage is not as good either. I would choose a toyota matrix, or a pontiac vibe. The vibe is made in the same factory as the matrix and has a toyota engine and more youthful styling.
