My grandaughter seems to understand a lot but still sounds like she is speaking a foreign language. I understand about 10% of what she says. She is constantly talking and obviously knows what she is saying because when I ask her to repeat she says "exactly" the same thing over and over. Do I need to worry?

There are agencies that give free speech and developmental screenings for children under 5 years of age. They will also provide free therapy for children requiring services. In my state it was called child development Services. Try the community pages in your phone book, if you don't see it call your local head start or Department of Human Services, they will be able to get you the number. It is not based on income, it is available to all children under 5. I had a son that I got screened and he started speech therapy at 3 years old...if there is a problem the earlier they start the better. Good Luck.

My son is also 27 months. Although I can understand him no one else can. He just has so much to say, and says it so quickly. He hasn't learned to articulate as of yet.
Your granddaughter is fine, and she does know what she is talking about, the next step is for her to speak clearly. It will come.
My 5 year old also did the same thing, then one morning she woke up and it was like she had been talking clearly her whole life.
Perfectly normal. Hope this helps!

I wouldn't worry to much at 27 months. But, perhaps you can play a "game" with her. Print some flashcards off of the internet of animals, shapes, colors and foods and work with on her breaking down syllables and say them loud and clear and have her repeat them. I did this with my daughter and we really had fun.
I used to tell my daughter I didn't understand what she said and she would get frustrated and say it loud and clear. I would praise her and even if she reverted to her previous speech I would remember what she was saying.
Of course the parents probablly understand 90% of what she says.

Don't worry about it. Do the parents understand her? A lot of people couldn't understand my daughter at that age....and my own grandmother has trouble understanding her now (child is nearly 3 1/2 now). But I always knew what she was saying.

NO, my grandson still grunts when he wants something . All children are different. i have two 2 yr old grandsons; one sounds like a parrott because he can repeat most of waht we say to him, including the less desireable terms he sometimes hears in public, but he doesn't understsnd what he's saying. The other one points and grunts, but both get their messages across, and will each grow as they are going to grow.

I had a son with similar problems. I would take your daughter to your pediatrician and let him evaluate your daughter's progress. My son had to have 5 years of speech therapy. He is above average in intelligence and we ended up taking him to the Children's Hospital for a battery of tests, with no definite results of why my son could not pronounce his words clearly, etc. My son is fine now.

If there is a real problem, you need to correct it as soon as you can. Otherwise, she will just fall further and further behind.

"If you have had her hearing checked" then not to worry. some children develop at different rates. sometimes there is a problem with there ears and they are hearing things differently than what is being spoken. This was the case with my grand-daughter and after having the problem corrected she is now on the road to a very healthy vocabulary.

No, my niece comes from very brainy parents and barely says an intellible thing at that age. I've met other kids who pick up late too. Just be patient.
