I have acid reflux, I know because my voice goes rough. I take cimetidine, have taken Prilosec, and Nexium and I am probably going back on Nex. Does anyone have any other suggestions besides drugs and not eating acidy foods, to help me manage this on a daily basis? Thanks in advance. I am female, 51 years old. Otherwise healthy enough.

Lots of good suggestions here so far...I'd just emphasize some weight loss if you are overweight. Daily Prilosec is a good idea and can be taken LONG term. You might want to toak with a Gastroenterologist if you haven't already to make sure it is reflux that is causing your problems...

I don't have a lot to say that hasn't been said already here. There is some good advice here! That said, put some old phone books or some other lifts under the posts or corners at the head of your bed. Lifting the head-side of your bed a few inches helps keep the acid down during the night. It will not blow acid reflux out of the water, and you may not even really notice much of a difference, but it helps and is easy to do. Good luck!

I also have Acid Reflux and I was Previcid for the longest time. I wanted to get off the medication so bad, so I did some research on the Internet. Basically, you really need to watch your diet. It's okay to eat acidy foods, but not to eat them day after day.

I'm a Male, 43 years old, and I have been off of my Previcid for 5 years. I keep track of my diet and I watch my acids. If I have tomatos on my hamburger on Tuesday, I stay away from acidy foods on Wednesday. It is all a matter of self-control.

Incompetence of the lower esophageal sphincter allows reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus, causing burning pain. Prolonged reflux may lead to esophagitis, stricture, and rarely metaplasia. Diagnosis is clinical, sometimes with endoscopy, with or without acid testing. Treatment involves lifestyle modification, acid suppression using proton pump inhibitors, and sometimes surgery.(Merck)
Certain foods and lifestyle are considered to promote gastroesophageal reflux:
* Coffee, alcohol, and excessive amounts of Vitamin C supplements are stimulants of gastric acid secretion. Taking these before bedtime especially can promote evening reflux. Calcium containing antacids are in this group.
* Foods high in fats and smoking reduce lower esophageal sphincter competence, so avoiding these tends to help, as well. Fat also delays emptying of the stomach.
* Having more but smaller meals also reduces the risk of GERD, as it means there is less food in the stomach at any one time.
* avoid eating for 2 hours before bedtime
* avoid soft drinks
* avoid chocolate and peppermint
* avoid spicy foods
* avoid acidic foods like oranges and tomatoes (however, they are okay when fresh.)
* avoid cruciferous vegetables: onions, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, brussel sprouts
* milk and milk-based products contain calcium and fat, so should be avoided before bedtime
Treatment:-
(1) Eating only small quantities of food at one time.
(2) Walking or standing for about half an hour after each meal.
(3) Sleeping propped up on pillows.
(4) Eating a diet free of greasy, fried, highly seasoned foods.
(5) Taking milk and antacids if symptoms similar to those of an ulcer are present.
(6) Reducing, if the patient is overweight.

Beside taking drugs like pantaprozole or omiprazole ( cematidine was prescribed long back) After meals u shud n't lie down immediatly & even at night shud lie in a postion in which chest & head r not horizontal i.e. With supports & pillows raise ur chest & head so as to minimise the reflux.

Tablets to prevent acid rifflux and diet are the good idea, as already mentioned by you. If you get the acid up in your gullet, take Rifflux Forte Tablets or Gel for good relief.

drink more water
keep the head of your bed up
try not to eat 2-3 hours before going to bed or lying down
