Well, we ended up homeschooling in order to allow our daughter to learn at her own pace, pursue topics in greater depth, and not be infected with the anti-intellectual culture of our public schools.

I would say in general to follow your children's passions, no matter what they are. Learning to delve into subjects in depth and spending time exploring them helps them develop the skills, perserverence, and curiosity needed for higher education. Let them watch you learn something new and see your struggles and your joyful accomplishments.
