family room has good wood paneling, but room needs brightening. can waincoating be directly applied over as dont want to remove paneling??? if so, how to attach ???

yes wood or vinyl wainscotting can be attached directly over paneling. depending on the finish of the paneling you may want to rough it up some in the area to be covered to get a better bond . I recomend using the vinyl personally because if you want white, you dont need to paint it, you'll want to use an adhesive such as liquid nail or pl 1000. dont use too much though you'll end up with a lumpy wall and the stuff can be messy, so take the extra effort to keep the work area clean and try not to get any on the face, because with vinyl these products can cause permanent staining. good luck

Do a nice job and it won't matter if you remove the old panelling or not.

As long as the panelling is well attached to the wall. Nailing it up should work fine and should also bolster the Panellings' attachment to the wall.

You may need to place furring strips (of wood) along the wall hosizontally to secure the wainscotting better, three pieces top - center - bottom of the coverage.

It is better if you remove the old paneling before installing the new wainscoating. It will fit better to the wall if the old stuff is removed.
