A cap isn't design to be used in this type of situation as it cannot produce more power. The purpose of a cap is to provide power when the electrical system has SMALL fluctuations, not large current (amperage) demands.
You will need to get a bigger alternator.
Here is a guide to help determine what you need http://www.datafilehost.com/download.php?file=6d26c621
You will need Microsoft Excel.
This guide also has a section to correctly set the gain control on the amp and you will need a multi-meter and a way to burn an audio CD from an MP3 to use it.
There's also a power wire chart.

The stereo device did not kill your alternator, your alternator spins an analogous no rely how lots juice you're drawing from it, there are different aspects although that shield how lots is sent to the battery and such. Do your lighting fixtures fixtures dim once you have the radio up? if so, then you certainly choose a greater output alternator, yet you're able to desire to be positive as is. as far because of fact the belt being to tight, that must be the project, besides the undeniable fact that there could desire to be an automated belt tensioner meaning there wouldn't have been room for human errors. The alternator could have in simple terms long gone, stuff happens.

i'd say get a better alt. i have a 01 grand am, and i am pulling about the same amount of power. but my car stock has a 105 amp alt. thats wasnt enough power for me, so i doubt 85 will do the trick.
good luck.

A high output alternator is one route to take. Another option that is both cheap and easy ( not to mention will help the system and protect your car ) is to install a capacitor or "cap" between your battery and amp. This will act like another battery, storing a charge so it doesn't drain your battery making the lights dim. It also insulates your power consumption from the alternator so it doesn't have to work as hard. All alternators are not designed to "charge" a battery or run appliances, they are simply there to maintain the battery's charge. you can run multiple caps in series and parallel and Monster Cable makes a very good one.

the more you spend on an alternator the longer its going to last because of how much power the amps are going to draw.
get a good battery also or else you will have trouble with the original one too: try getting an optima(i think red top)
