Well, it really depends on your Aunt's level of sensitivity, the tone in your voice, and the spirit in which it was said. I have called myself the "neighborhood cat lady" in a joking sort of way before, and I didn't offend myself. I love cats .. I have 3. "Cat lady" doesn't sound like such an insult to me. The relationship you have with your Aunt and if you have a history of loving jokes really can make the difference. Here's another example:
Some guy at work the other day told me I smell like warm garbage. Now, I know I don't smell like warm garbage, and I also know he was completely teasing. So, I didn't really think much of it. I laughingly replied "I am going to go cry now" and walked away. Had someone I did not have a teasing relationship said that to me, wow --- it really would have hurt and angered me.
If you are worried that your Aunt did not take the comment in the loving spirit it was intended, then explain to her that you meant no ill will. And that there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a "cat lady." If cats are her passion, then more power to her. Tell her that "neighborhood cat lady" simply describes her love for cats, and that she has discovered how wonderful cats are when no one else in her neighborhood has. She's a genius!

It's sort of funny actually but there is more to being the neighbourhood cat lady than having 3 cats I can tell you.
I have 14 at the moment and this is the first place people come to when they find a stray, I have had people I don't know turn up with kittens found under hedges etc, It's also the first place they come when they lose one because they know they all come here !

No I don't think so. if she wasn't a cat lady she wouldn't have but one house and like 3 or 4 toys around for her three cats anything to much more then that means she's a cat lady and she cares alot about her cats.

If she truely loves cats, she will not be offended by this. Unless to said it in a way, you thought it was pathetic. I love cats, and would not be offended by someone saying these, unless the meant it in a rude way. By the way you speak of her house, you seem to think of her in a bad way.Hopefully you mean "crap" as in just a bunch of junk. Hopefully if it was really crap, you would do something about getting those poor cats out.

Well things certainly have changed when it comes to family and the way we get along in todays society. But I am an old fashioned girl and I believe family knows you best and if someone you love is saying hurtful things, maybe you should consider their words. Now tact and consideration should definately play a part in how you respond to a family member gone awry. But if you love someone, are you to just sit by and watch them become, "The neighbourhood cat lady" as you call it? We all know EXACTLY what you are referring to.

Yes. However, sometimes people need to know the truth even if it hurts for their own good. She sounds like she might be mentally unstable, most packrats are and you did say she is a "homebody". Can you offer to help go through some of her stuff and give to the salvation army? Also, even if she is boring, could you get her out of the house once in a while like to a movie? And if there is crap everywhere how can it not stink? I would leave some anymous notes in her mailbox or under her door saying "Can you please take care of your mess and clean you kitty litter boxes because it's disgusting?" Good luck.

It depends how she took it. Some people might take it as an insult because of the connotation of keeping alot of cats as being "crazy". 3 cats is not a lot of cats though so I don't know why you would even say that to her.

It depends on her sense of humor...
If I were you, I would buy her some cute little cat toy or a trinket with a cat on it and apologize. If you don't want to do it in person, you could mail it to her with a cat card. She would probably really appreciate that, and then you wouldn't have to feel so guilty.
Be nice to your aunt.

it particularly is in simple terms yet another of many motives that cats could be saved indoors in basic terms. there are various whackos accessible. i'm hoping they do get detention center time and that i'm sorry to your loss, yet take this as a lesson - cats that are allowed exterior run the prospect of many, MANY undesirable deaths. Cats that are indoors are extra advantageous than happy adjusted cats - that stay long lives because of the fact they're risk-free.
