Depends on your driving skills. If you're a new driver and expect to get into an accident possibly in your first few years, go with a cheap car. 90's model accura integra or civic.
If you're a good driver and want a good reliable car, deffinately go with the civic hybrid or anything else hybrid, hands down. Those cars have much better performance and reliability than anything else out there. And what ever you do, don't buy american, those cars are just garbage and you need brain damage to convince yourself that it's a good car. WV and Mercedes is garbage too because it's getting to be more american owned.

My first vehicle was a new Honda Civic Sedan and my Wife's was a Civic CRX and both are excellent on Gas (40 mpg) and they look good to, they both lasted over 10 years with about 150,000 miles then we traded them in. We had 3 Honda's that gave us great insurance rates, gas mileage, affordability and longevity plus they have great re-sell value. I now drive Toyota's and they are also known to last for years, but they are on the more pricey side. If I were you, I would start off with a nice clean Honda and upgrade when you are financially stable to the vehicle of your choice.
American Cars are famous for ending up on the side of the roads or as yard decorations. Don't even think of getting a Mitsubishi, Hyundai,or Dodge because they really suck and have no re-sell value until the 4th year of purchase.

If you can find one, I recommend the 2000 Honda Civic Si. Out of the box it has a160 hp. V-TEC motor, not to bad for a first time driver. Depending on how cool your parents are, ask them to put the car in their name and add you as a driver, so you won't get killed to bad on insurance.

Get something a little on the tamer side like a Civic or Accord sedan. It'll help your insurance premiums.

If you're looking for reliability, go Toyota or Honda. If you want low insurance costs, go Saturn, Hyundai, or Kia. As far as specific cars, I'd say go with the Toyota Corolla. It's reasonably priced, is top-notch for reliability among small cars, and gets great gas mileage.

You'll do best with a used Honda Civic or Mazda 3. Both are quick , reliable, handle well, and you can easily modify them for speed.

From my experiences all Hondas should be avoided. Seems like they either go to 200k or aren't worth fixing to get to 80k...good luck
