First, I know there are similar questions about this - but I thought I'd ask it again and attempt to filter out the illogical answers.

For the purposes of this question I am assuming a god exists.

The answers to previous questions seem to have come under a few basic categories

1) "God doesn't lie"
2) "God doesn't lie because the bible says so"
3) "God is perfect, so he doesn't lie"
4) "Read the bible and find out for yourself"

My responses to these are as follows

1) Any reason why you think that?
2) The bible is gods word. He is just telling you he doesn't lie. A liar would say the same thing.
3) God is only perfect according to the bible, which is gods word. So see (2)
4) I have read the bible, but I don't see why I should trust the claims god makes for himself regarding his trustworthiness.

Finally, don't threaten me with hell because I am a "non-believer". It's pointless, I don't believe Hell exists, and it confirms christianity is a religion based on fear of punishment.

Arran B: I stated at the beginning that for the question, I am assuming God exists. I am trying to find Christian viewpoints.

Scott: All I have as "confirmation" that god never lies is the bible, which is gods word i.e. god tells people that god never lies. A liar will also say that they never lie.

julia ///: your argument is full of holes and assumptions. First, I do not believe I was created in the same sense as a chair was created, or any other man-made object was created - as a final product. I started from cells and grew naturally. That doesn't need a creator. Second, using your argument about parents. If you call my parents my creators, then why does that mean all other adults have to be creators too? "If his mother and his father were able to create him, it should follow that all other husbands and wives should beget children". No it shouldn't! This is a huge flaw in your argument. Third - you argue that a creator will create something perfect. Using your argument I'm not perfect, ergo I have no creator. Going the other way, if I have a creator and I am not perfect, creators can create imperfect things. So my parents could still be considered my creators, even though I am imperfect. Fourth, you say that man cannot recreate all of nature. I agree. But it is a big leap ....

(julia /// cont)... that there must have been a creator. Fifth, if god created every part of the human body with a use, then how about body hair? What use does that have? Tonsils? Sixth, I have therefore disagreed with pretty much everything you have said thus far. I have not reached the conclusion that you seem to expect me to. I still do not agree that there is convincing evidence for a supernatural creator.

C.S.Lewis was probably one of the most brilliant minds in England during the twentith century. In 1942, at the height of WWII, he wrote an essay entitled:

"Right and Wrong as a Clue to the Meaning of the Universe"

In it he shows that the ideas of right and wrong or good and evil are inate to mankind. If this were not so, then the whole point of opposing Hitler was worthless. The whole concept of blame is irrelevent.

What is behind that concept of Right and Wrong:

The individule? Hardly! Hitler said that the Holocost was good.

Society? not that either. Germany stood behind what Hitler was doing.

Religion? 9/11 proves that that is not necessirily the case.

Evolution? If so, can it be that in 1,000,000 years from now, we will have evoled a different concept of right and wrong? I don't think so and neither does any thinking person.

So what is behind that concept of Right and Wrong.

I call that thing, person, force (Whatever name you want to give it) --God--

Now the problem comes from the idea that if God exists and has placed within us the inate sense of right and wrong, then He has done it for a reason. What is that reason? I believe that I know. However, until someone figures it out for themselves, quoting the Bible or the Koran or Marx, or Darwin, or Dawkin makes little sense.

Now to your question. We know the difference between Right and Wrong. We know that lying is wrong. Would the One that programmed us to know the difference, then violate the moral code that He has implanted in us? You be the judge, but remember that you can only make that decision on the basis of knowing Right and Wrong. Do not lie to yourself.

Obviously I did not give the whole essay by C.S.Lewis. In it he shows that cultures do not have different Moral values. ( There is no culture that honours a liar, or says that stealing is good. They may say that a man may have one or several wives but they do not say that adultry and rape are good) I could go on and on but I think you see the point.

It's going to be a sad day for you on judgement day...I hope someday you will see the truth before it is too late. Be Blessed.

PS...I do not believe you are trying to seek the truth...and it is odd to me for someone who does not believe...why you are investing time in this subject...that in itself leads me to believe that you do believe...you are just rebellious and want to go your own way in life...and you are trying to find ways to justify it.

Sorry...not meant to be a threat...I can't change what the bible says any more than you can...and it says there is but one way to Heaven and that is through Jesus Christ...but once again I find it odd that you could be offended by something you yourself said you do not believe...you said you don't believe in hell...so even if it were a threat why would that be offensive to you...If I told you the great purple mountain lion was going to come get you tonight...I couldn't imagine how that would feel threatening if you didn't believe in the great purple mountain lion....I think you are on a mission to argue....nothing more...

Body hair is for warmth...tonsils are filters for bacteria...

Of course God does not lie-- it says it in the BIBLE!!!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Numbers 23:19
God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent.

1 Samuel 15:29
The Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent.

2 Samuel 7:28
Thou art that God, and thy words be true.

Titus 1:2
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.

Hebrews 6:18
It was impossible for God to lie.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

on the other hand.........

Not only does God lie, he makes his prophets lie as well!!! It's right here in the BIBLE!!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 Kings 22:23
Now, therefore, behold, the Lord hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of these thy prophets, and the Lord hath spoken evil concerning thee.

2 Chronicles 18:22
Now therefore, behold, the Lord hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of these thy prophets.

Jeremiah 4:10
Ah, Lord GOD! surely thou hast greatly deceived this people.

Jeremiah 20:7
O Lord, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived.

Ezekiel 14:9
And if a prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the Lord have deceived that prophet.

2 Thessalonians 2:11
For this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The question is --- ' Can God be both a liar and not a liar at the same time?' Maybe its like Shroedingers cat....

Thanks for asking the question again. This is the first time I've seen it.

Christians believe that God does not lie. We believe that God is perfect, without sin or mistake, and since lying and deceiving is a sin, He is not capable of that.

So...may I turn the question around? What is it that makes you believe God is NOT telling the truth?

2007-03-06 00:47:27 · answer #5 · answered by Scotty Doesnt Know 7 · 3 1

It is impossible for God to lie. When he speaks, he literally watches over his word to perform that for which he has sent it to perform. God spoken words are like 'servants' - they depend on no one and on nothing. They have the potential to create because of the God who spoke them.

I think it is also important that it should be understood that God is not man....as it is written "God is not a man that he should lie nor a son of man that he should change his mind." So, we see that he does not even corrects himself - for he never errs.

God does lie which is the source of bliss for his associates and devotees.

For instance when Lord Sri Krishna was playing the pastimes of childhood, as every child would eat mud, he ate mud, but upons enquiry by his mother yasoda, Krishna plainly told lie that he did not eat the mud. Mother Yadoda disbeliving the word of Krishna opened the mouth of Krishn to see the mud, but she saw whole lot of mud with planets, stars, universes etc....

God is incapable of lying because if he says it he speaks into existence. Like when it was dark, he said let there be light and there was light. God is not able to lie. If he says it, it is so.
