By digital video camera, do you mean one that records on solid-state media such as SD or Compact Flash cards? You can get a digital video camera that records on tape but most use the term to mean a camera that records video on solid-state cards.

The advantage of a solid-state video camcorder is that there are no moving parts. The reliability should be much higher than a camcorder with a tape mechanism. A solid-state recorder will be less susceptible to vibration and physical abuse. Video recorded on an SD card is available immediately with no rewinding, which is a big benefit for professional news videographers.

One disadvantage of recording video on solid-state media is that the media is very expensive, compared to tape. You can get about 20 minutes of decent-quality home video on a $20 1 GB card, but you can get 60 minutes of high-quality video on a $5 tape.

However, as the price of solid-state media drops, I think that we will all end up recording on something like SD cards in the future.

Advantages: Easy to use, easy to edit, adapt, manipulate, cheap… so on.

Disadvantages: It lacks the look and 'soul' of film, there's actually some very expensive software out there that takes digital video and runs it through a process to make it look like film, but it's still not as good as actually filming on film.

Think of it this way, someone playing a guitar or someone playing a synth with guitar samples - that for me is the difference between digtal / film video.

No disadvantages that I know of. But you are getting pure digital video, HD if you have a high camera. You can pull your movies off digitally through FireWire (1394) or USB 2.0 and edit them on your PC.
