Absolutely. In my opinion once you gain the trust and affection of a bird it far surpasses that of a dog. The reason I feel this way is because for one dogs have been domesticated for hundreds of years to be faithful to men. However, most parrots are still not considered domesticated. Meaning that you may only have a 3rd or 4th generation bred in captivity. So, the 'instict' to naturally love a human isn't bred into them yet. Therefore, once you gain the trust and affection of the bird I believe it is stronger because it was by choice that the bird decided to love you not by 'genes'. If that makes sense. Of there are species of birds that are more affectionate than others. For instance the cockatoo especially the umbrella or moluccan. They love their human companions and want nothing more than to snuggle up to them literally ALL DAY long everyday. They become very depressed and develop sad habits if not given the love they so desired. Also, if you look at feral parrots you will see that it is in their nature to be affectionate. You'll see them preening each other and actually kissing and cuddling their mate. In domesticated birds, they do the same to their human companions because they think of them as a mate. Dogs are affectionate, but it is a fact that they are not affectionate and 'faithful' in the wild. That is where we get the idea to call an unfaithful man a 'dog'. Most parrots on the other hand are by nature faithful to their mates and form lifelong companionships.

Quite true. Depending on the type of bird you are talking about as handled birds will react differently than small songbirds that are rarely touched. When you scratch them under the chin or on the back of the neck you will imitate grooming behavior. Your bird will enjoy this quite a bit and will often seek you out just for this. This isn't affection as much as a bonding behavior but you will find your bird will enjoy snuggling with you and just being around you in general.

They do, based my experience with love bird. My bird made noise when I didn't play with it. It liked climbing up to my shoulder, bite my ear and rubbed against my face. The bird also liked playing hide and seek in my short sleeve T-shirt. It was the best companion when I surf Internet because it would hop on the keyboard and squeeze between my finngers holding the mouse.

Spend time loving your birds and I am sure you will be returned with the same amount, or more, of love.

I believe that with the given time and patience with an animal they can love you unconditionally no matter what type. I have two birds and also my friend has has all kinds of pets and they will love you the same. You just need to show them love back, kindness and patience. Animals are great. Good Luck!!! What type of birds do you have? I have two parakeets. I also have 4 dogs and a horse. They are all great.

They do and can. They have several ways of showing you this including spitting up their food, singing to you, giving kisses and if in heat a male will try to hump your finger or the female will stand under you as if mounted by a male. This is completely normal all you have to do is calmly let them no it's impossable to mate with them. Don't flip out. One of the biggest ways they show love is they will preen you. Pulling and playing on your hair as if cleaning it.

Of course they can. I wake up every morning to my Quaker parrot that's walked over to my bed, climbed up and snuggled under the covers or right into my ear, combing my hair before I even have to get up!
