I really enjoy this one. The taste of the freshy grated nutmeg cannot compare with the ground version in my opinion. If all you have, however, is the dried type, use a little more (1 1/2 teaspoons).

1/2 cup butter, softened
1-1/3 cups sugar, divided
2 large eggs
1/2 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
2-3/4 cups flour
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg, divided

Beat butter at medium speed of an electric mixer until creamy. Gradually add 1 cup sugar, beating well. Add eggs, sour cream and vanilla; beat well.

In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg; stir well. Gradually add to butter mixture, beating until blended. Cover and chill dough at least 3 hours.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine 1/3 cup sugar and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg; stir well. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Roll balls into sugar mixture. Place 2 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheets. Bake for 8 - 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove cookies to wire racks to cool.

is this the one?

Nutmeg Sugar Cookies

1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup salad oil
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt

1. In a large bowl, with a mixer on medium speed, beat 1/2 cup butter, granulated sugar, and powdered sugar until smooth. Add oil, egg, and vanilla and beat until well blended.

2. In a medium bowl, mix 2 cups flour, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt. Stir into butter mixture, then beat until well blended. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and freeze until dough is firm, about 1 hour.

3. Shape dough into 1-inch balls and place about 2 inches apart on buttered 12- by 15-inch baking sheets. Press each cookie with the lightly floured tines of a fork to flatten slightly.

4. Bake cookies in a 350° regular or convection oven until edges are lightly browned, 8 to 10 minutes; if baking two sheets at once in one oven, switch their positions halfway through baking. Let cookies cool on sheets for 5 minutes, then use a wide spatula to transfer to racks to cool completely.

YIELD: 3 Dozen

Eggnog Thumbprints
2/3 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 slightly beaten egg whites
1-1/2 cups finely chopped walnuts
Ground nutmeg for sprinkling
Rum filling:
1/4 cup butter, softened
1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
1 teaspoon rum or 1/4 teaspoon rum extract
1 to 2 teaspoons milk

Lightly grease a cookie sheet; set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add granulated sugar and the 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg. Beat until combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Beat in egg yolks and vanilla. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Using a wooden spoon, stir in any remaining flour.

If necessary, cover and chill about 1 hour, or until dough is easy to handle.

Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Roll balls in egg whites, then in chopped walnuts to coat. Place balls about 1 inch apart on prepared cookie sheet. Press your thumb into the center of each ball.

Bake in a 375-degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or until edges are lightly browned. Transfer cookies to a wire rack; cool.

To make filling: In a small mixing bowl, beat butter until softened. Add powdered sugar and beat until fluffy. Beat in rum or rum extract and enough milk to make a filling of spreading consistency.

When cookies are cool, pipe or spoon about 1/2 teaspoon filling into the center of each. Sprinkle with additional nutmeg.

Makes about 40 cookies.

Times testing notes: Don’t be wimpy about pushing your thumb into the cookie. A shallow depression will disappear in cooking. Also, pipe or spoon filling in just before serving. If you want to make in advance, bake cookies and freeze, then fill later.
