Fiaona said it best. It is indeed funny to see people do that. I suspect it itches so bad and suddenly it is a reflex or nearly reflex reaction followed by realising what they have done!!!
One trick: when bum itches, back up to a light post or something lean back and wiggle a bit. People won't have much of a clue as to what you are doing!!!

If you have an itch you have to scratch it, no matter where it is. It's funny though when someone in front of me scratches their backside THEN turns round to see if anyone is behind them and saw them do it.
