It can be an illness, particularly if it is causing you distress and interfering with your ability to function in other areas, like sleep. Generally it is associated with both depression and anxiety and the cognitive distortions involved in the behavior are perfectionism (if I think about it enough, I'll find the right answer) and a distorted view of control (trying to find what you can do to change or prevent some occurrence from happening or someone from acting a certain way). Here are a couple things that you can try to help you stop:
1) Use a worry journal-write down all the things that prey on your mind at night as a list an assign yourself a time the next day (limit the time to 30-60mins) when you will explore the subject, thereby giving yourself permission to sleep at night. When you create your worry list, prioritize it, choose one issue at a time, and attack it using the problem-solving process (define, generate solutions, choose one, implement the choice and evaluate the outcome) as this will force you to break the cycle of continually rethinking the same ground and dwelling.
2) Focus on what you can realistically do in response to a situation or in anticipation of a situation and don't allow yourself to become caught up in what you can do to control the outcome. Instead focus on how you can cope with other people's choices/actions/outcomes rather than trying to control a nother person's behavior. Use your own values as a guide to making decisions about what to do instead of what you think is most likely to achieve the result you desire and accept that you really have no control over what other people do or over the outcome of most things.
For further information on cognitive distortions and alternative coping strategies, read the book Feeling Good:The New Mood Therapy by Burns. He's the father of CBT.

The truth is, if everyone thought too much, they would be mentally ill! You may have a mental illness, but you probably don't. Some people are just natural worriers and everyone obsesses over things to a certain degree.
You need to find ways to distract yourself and strategies to relax. As some have suggested, yoga etc may help. Try to train yourself to think about the positive and avoid things and people that make you feel bad about yourself. You could try seeing someone or taking medication, but try to help yourself first, as that is what others will tell you to do anyway. Good luck.

I'm the same, I have slowly realized it's called negativity, I don't know exaxctly how to change it but I know once you've realized it, you're half way there & when there's a will, there's a way.
one way is by using affirmations such as I am positive everytime i have a bad thought which is very helpful.
It could be obsessive thinking, I take a remedy (similiar to Bach remedies) from Austarlian Bush Flower remedies called BORONIA (see link) whic is for obsessive thoughts.
PS> you cannot take it directly & have to dilute it in 1/4 brandy & 3/4 pure water.& add 7 drops. & take 2 drops morning 7 evening.

Maybe you're just extremely stressed out. You should talk to a professional or just take a break from all the things in your life that are making you worry. Do something you enjoy or haven't done in awhile. Meet up with old friends; go shopping. Take a long bath; listen to your favorite music. Realize that the more you think about things, sometimes the worst a situation becomes. The more you think can sometimes make you sick and a lot times you don't even have to think as much as you do.

Yes this can become a serious problem if it is causing lack of sleep .I dont recommend sleep aid for like myself when you dont take it you really have problems .sounds like you dont have enough time in the day to relax and let all this stuff settle down in your head .You need about One hour In the evening to yourself to relax and let some stress go .But I would see my doctor if this continues ,start making a do list before you go to bed maybe this could help .Good luck

It might be a sign of OCD, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. You might be able to change some of that for yourself, but most likely you will need medication to help you. It doesn't mean you are crazy. You just need help relaxing and enjoying life as it is in your surroundings. Call your doctor and tell him how you are feeling. He can run some tests and easily find out.

Try cognitive behaviour therapy, your gp can help you find a therapist. You need to figure out the cause before you can find a solution! You could be stressed, or have insomnia, or be prone to obbsession; you won't figure it out by yourself so get help.
Its a shame theres no better term for this kind of thing other than mental health which has such a stigma from people who have never been through it.
Best of luck :)

try being my girlfriend,
Shes got manic depression and things run through her mind day and night.
Your worried about something, find out what it is, fix it!
I used to suffer from something weird when i was young, i used to goto bed, and "day dream" for about 4 hours then come to realising im not asleep, it was a nightmare.
I was day dreaming / thinking about all the things i had on my mind.
Ive just bought a house and had the same day dreaming night for a few weeks, torture! getting up for work on only about 3 or 4 hours proper sleep.
Heres the tip, before you goto bed, get a pen and some paper, and jot down any notes your thinking about, usually these are things u feel u need to remember for the next day etc.

Don't stress, we all have our problems, but thinking about them 24/7 can drive anyone mad. I was like that, I couldn't sleep all night..you need to learn to relax your mind, I tried some Yoga and meditation, works great, you can always visit a therapist who can prescribe you some medicine to get high on and dull everything, I don't recommend this, try the meditation and I guarantee you will feel tons better.
