Gout is the chronic inflammation of the joints due to a range of potential causes. It is the result of excessive uric acid forming crystals in the joints. These crystals deposit will usually lead to inflammatory arthritis which will cause heat, pain, redness, stiffness, and swelling in the joints. It is a painful rheumatic disease and is definitely not the most enviable medical condition that will top anyone’s lists of medical problems to have. When one is tortured by Gout, the inflammation is more often than not painful and the pain experienced can be in a very sharp, stinging manner. At times, the pain can even last a very long period of time but there are instants where it will go away after awhile. It is rare in children and young adults and is more common in male than female. It affects about more 800 out of every 100,000 individuals.

The painful symptoms of gout are caused by the high concentration of uric acid in the blood. In a healthy and normal person, the body will remove excessive uric acid by flushing it out through the urinal system. However for people with gout, the uric acid are stored in the blood, which ends up setting in the joints. This uric acid, which settles in the joints, will form crystals and finally lead to attacks of gout.

What is gout? has been answered well already. Here the docs recommend no red meat! None at all. No Beer! They also list a whole host of other foods to be avoided, like tomatoes etc. Sufferers who abstain from the forbidden foods suffer far fewer bouts of pain. (fancy meds are either not available or far too expensive here) The diet restrictions DO work, but are not fool proof. Besides a lot of people start to feel ok and then, well, I'll just have ....... and of course they regret that the next day! So talk to your doc about dietary control before you start resorting to over kill with drugs. You may also need drugs, but you should never rely only on these, its not good for you, but fantastic for the drug manufacturers.

I knew it was caused by eating certain foods but I didn't know it was a form of arthritis:

"The cause of gout is an inflammation in your joint resulting from an accumulation of urate crystals. Uric acid is a waste product formed from the breakdown of purines. These are substances found naturally in your body as well as in certain foods, especially organ meats — such as liver, brains, kidney and sweetbreads — and anchovies, herring, asparagus and mushrooms.
Normally, uric acid dissolves in your blood and passes through your kidneys into your urine. But sometimes your body either produces too much or excretes too little of this acid. In that case, uric acid can build up, forming sharp, needle-like crystals (urate) in a joint or surrounding tissue that cause pain, inflammation and swelling.
Crystal deposits also cause another condition, known as false gout (pseudogout). But rather than being composed of uric acid, pseudogout crystals are made of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate. And while pseudogout can affect the big toe, it's more likely to attack large joints such as your knees, wrists and ankles".

It comes form a diet of high fat foods combined with your body's inability to process and dispose of that food properly. Crystals form in joints usually knee or foot. Eat less fat and drink cherry juice or cider and it usually becomes quite manageable.
