when you yawn your body is releasing carbon dioxide into the air. carbon dioxide being a gas is then inhaled by an innocent bystander who then yawns because he has just inhaled your recently exhaled carbon dioxide.

When our oxygen supply has to be increased we try to hyperventilate by yawning. Its contagious only when we are in a closed environment, b'coz we give out equally high amounts of carbon-di-oxide into the environment which stimulates the other person's respiratory system to hyperventilate!

when your body needs more oxygen you yawn to get more oxygen.
It is contagious because seeing someone reminds you of the niceties and you too want to yawn. (and then go to sleep).
