Would I be correct in assuming that your parents are either pushing you hard or at the very least expect nothing but the best from you? It seems like you are in a tough situation. I'd be willing to bet that most people who answer this question are going to tell you to ease up a little bit and not worry about being at the top of your class. That's not bad advice, but I'd also be willing to bet that you won't do that. If they'll listen, explain to your parents how you feel, and maybe they will be OK with you dropping an activity or class. If you don't think they'll be supportive of you, try talking to a guidance counselor at school; that is what they are there for. Also, remember that even though your life is not so great now, this stage WILL end. There will be happy and relaxing times in your future. Always keep that thought in the back of your mind. Good Luck!

I am sorry you are so stressed. I know we put a lot of pressure on teens to excel in HS.

These are my suggestions as a former teacher: Break assignments into manageable modules. Take frequent breaks between assignments. Go for a 10 minute walk outside and breathe some fresh air. Sit down to dinner with your family. In between subjects, call a friend for a brief conversation.

Stress can have a negative effect on your life so talking with a counselor may help. Ask for help to generate a plan to ease your anxiety. Good luck to you.

Rajdeep,

Bad news is, yes, you have a problem. Good news is, you can probably treat it without meds.

The basis of your problem is a matter of expectations. You are trying to hard to live up to what you believe are others expectations of you. You are probably the sensitive type who tries very hard to please others. You need to recognize that you cannot and should not try to please everyone. You set your own goals and expectations and not care is one person here or there thinks you're underchieveing. It's your life and you can choose what makes you happy, not what others think you need to do. I was once the sensitive type but now, I set my own goals and don't care if someone here or there disagrees with it.

I might suggest you seek some counseling through your school first. If not there, get a referral from your GP to a psychologist. You need to develop more confidence in yourself and your decisions.

You need to stop worrying about school and whether or not you'll disappoint anyone. School isn't worth your health. Keep good grades, but you don't have to be the best. Do your best.
