my son is 12. I switched my son from strattera to adderall. he was on the medicine for about 6 months . He has done better in social circles and done alot better in school. He was on 90 mg of straterra and now he is on 30mg of adderall. It is a good move or you will just end up having to up his dose of strattera every cpl of years. I have had good results from adderall and he has been on it about 2 yrs. Hope this helps. Here is a site that will help you learn more about adderall. www.adderallxr.com I would not reccommend ritolin. My son had suicicidle thoughts while taking it and horrible moodswings.

My two favorites for ADHD are Concerta and Metadate, with a preference for Concerta if this is a school aged child, you want once a day dosing with a full day effect (should last him through the homework hours) and yet not a complex formulation that would be likely to cause any ill effect.
The Concerta breaks apart in bits, with only one portion of medication releasing every few hours, so it's just as effective at the end of the day as it was during the morning. This is great for kids who are in school or doing homework until 4 or 5p.m.
Dosing is also very flexible, as they come in strengths varying from 18mg all the way up to (I think) 72mg. I have a 15 year old stepdaughter who takes 36mg/day, but we started her at 18mg/day and for a younger child I would certainly start him low, give it a couple of weeks, then review how he's doing.
It's important to also couple the dosing of meds with counseling or a program that will teach him how to monitor his own behavior, choices, impulsivity and organizational skills. There's only so much medication can cover so he'll need some extra help in those areas as for kids with ADHD it's not so automatically learned :)
Best to you...

My 9 yo son was on straterra, until we found out about the possible liver damage risks, and risks of suicide. We chose a different path after attending an online workshop & learned more about the possible causes of adhd.
this is the site i found the workshop info on
http://athomewith.ahealthcafe.com.
No matter what you decide, I would highly recommend educating yourself further on the causes & roots of the problem first. I have not regretted it, and my son has been off of his meds & doing fabulous for a year now.

Ritalin is also a good medicine.
I am not in US so don't know trade names but stimulants to which ADHD has good response also includes Atomoxetine.
DOn't be wary of this because neither drug is a treatment for ADHD but merely alleviates symptoms and the only way we can judge the best drug for a child is to try it on him/her

I am working with students with ADHD
some of them are taking ritalin. At some it works, but you need to make sure that your child will not have any side effects. But the doctor knows what is the best for your child!

My little bro. is 11 and he is on some meds. now. He is ADHD and Bipolar. He used to take adderall and he switched to ritalin.. Ritalin makes your kid very drowsy, and tired like a zombie. And adderall can be easily non-effective. The meds. he is on now help him ALOT. they are called Trileptal. It's a mood stabalizer. but it works! :) glad i could help!

ritalin is very good with adhd, but monitor it closely if you choose this med. it is shown to cause a slow down in growth, and can also cause or amplify depression and aggression. used carefully at the lowest dose effective, it is very good.

my son was on adderal and I loved it but due to the recent problems with it he took him off and put him on Strattera which I don't like as well, and he doesn't respond to it as well as he did adderal.
