I'd like to visit one weekend in the Summer with my husband. Can you recommend somewhere 4 star to stay, and something to do which doesn't involve too much walking or having to drive or catch a bus or taxi.

I would stay at the malmaison which is built in the grounds of the old Oxford prison and castle- bit spooky but a really different experience.

Walking around the colleges is fantastic, take a punt down the river and visit the botanical gardens. There is also the Ashmoleum museum and Bodleain library is a beautiful building.

There are lots of really cool tucked away pubs like the bear (which is the oldest) and the turf tavern. For dinner there is a realy nice restaurant called the lemon tree but you would need to get a taxi there (only about a fiver)

Have fun!

There are lots of gorgeous hotels in Oxford. Malmaison Oxford and Paramount Oxford Hotel are both nice 4 star ones in the city centre.

As for things to do, you will have to use some form of transport! I enjoyed the Botanical Gardens, and just looking at some of the colleges is nice, plus they have great grounds and some let you just lie there and relax. I really recommend hiring a punt. They are great fun, and it's nice to be on the water, as Oxford really does get hot.

Oxford is a great place for shopping. There are tons of quirky, individual shops, as well as your chains. The indoor market is great, especially Ben's cookies, which are made in front of you. Hope this helps!

I too recommend Malmaison for a nice hotel.
The botanic gardens are great on a summer's day, the indoor market is good for quirky things. Wander round the colleges. Punting or rowing is excellent fun. In summer be there early or book by phone before as they tend to get queues.

For the best ice cream in the world try George and Danvers or G&D, one is on St. Aldates and one is on Little Clarendon Street. Bangkok House thai restaurant on Hythe Bridge street has excellent food and is really beautiful too. But book!

if you stay in the city centre you won't have to drive or catch a bus as it's pretty small. you may end up walking a fair bit though.
i've only been on day trips so i can't recommend a place to stay, but wandering around the universities is great :)

Stay at the Co ck and Camel. Comfortable and right in the centre of town.

You can walk to most attarctions which are largely based around colleges. Go a lie in one of the parks in summer. They're awesome.

The Randolph Hotel is a 5 star hotel and in the centre of Oxford. It's where Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton used to stay. (I know because I saw them leaving it one day).
