the term edema means swelling! the vertebrae are bones that form the spinal column! Marrow is the blood forming cells in the body of the vertebra mixed with fat cells and bony spicules (ridges). So literally, it means swelling of the core of the body of the vertebrae! It can be caused by many different things such as trauma, inflammation, tumor, viral or bacterial infection. It depends on the context in which it is being used, but it is a descriptive term! not a diagnosis in and of its self! Good Luck
