if hes a physical child, and ou have space, how about a trampoline, climbing frame etc..
wouldnt recommend books, as he probably will have hundreds of them - or will get lots for his birthday
some funky bedding / curtains
a day out to favourite theme park / cinema etc..

The best gift you can give any 4-year old is your unconditional love (no conditions attached). However, if you want to buy your 4-year old boy a gift for his birthday, buy something that he needs like clothes. Also you can't go wrong if you buy him books. Look for beginning reader books and read to him every day. You can give your child too much money, too many games, too much junk food, too many movies, too much of almost everything but you can't give him too many books. If your child is introduced to books at an early age, he'll grow up to be an avid reader and perform above average at school.

Anything from the Disney cars Movie is a big hit for this age!!! Also Thomas the tank train, arts & craft projects, BOOKS!!!, Leapster, Movies, clothes, gift certificate to a toy store, government bond, Bicycle, power rangers.

I always pick movies. I have a four year old, and everytime he gets toys for presents, he plays with them for a couple of days and then they are tossed to the side (if he doesn't break them first). At least with a good movie, when he gets tired of watching it, it can be re-sold.

dino, doggie party, trucks, contstrution and then you can tell all the little children to bring there fav toy truck or dump truck and buy a couple of bags of sand and let them all play with then trucks in the sand, they can make little vest to wear and play red light green light
