So I had a conversation with...can't remember. But they said truth was not relative. So I said 2+2=4. They said that it was in a base of 2, but in a base of 4, 10 it was something else.
He responded by making a factual/ absolutely true statement.
So is truth relative? If so, what do you mean. Are you saying there is NO truth or do you mean the APPLICATION of that truth is relative depending on the situation?

Good quest & Orcs8-
Could the opposite of truth be false (not necessarily a lie).
This is where the difference between ignorance & stupidity come into play.

Truth is relative. Truth depends on perception, if everyone perceives something the same way then that is a common truth.
If I look at a color and declare it red, and you declare it orange does that mean one of us is lying? If I pick up a large brick and say it is heavy and you pick it up and find it light am I dishonest?
Have you ever heard that there are exceptions to every rule, if that's true shouldn't there be a rule that has no exceptions? But if there is then the statement about exceptions is wrong........
See where I am going with that?

Truth is relative...it's opposite is a lie/dishonesty.
The fad word of today is being used ...literally the word "perception" is being used to point blank back up lies quoting the word perception exists as a right to lie - the wise know that is a manipulation tactic and can tell a person is lying do to their own words. Consider that most that choose to lie have a history of throwing fits and attempting to rationalize, twist, and bend especially if honesty is present. Trust is broken by the person who chooses to be dishonest it's simply not an issue that can be toiled with.
When someone asks a question they are ultimately seeking the truth. Nobody goes around asking to be lied to or manipulated unless there a unhealthy or have an agenda. The theory of relativism is lacking largely in the common sense department in fact the whole theory is arrogant and grandiose.

Carry out this experiment: go to the grocery store. Buy exactly $5.00 worth of items. Hand the cashier a ten dollar bill. When she gives you five dollars in change, tell her, pointedly, that she owes you forty dollars more. When she asks you why, tell her it is because you gave her a fifty dollar bill. Forgive her when she tells you, "Well, it may have been a fifty to you but it was a ten in the real world."
Who determines the denominations of money in the United States? The United States! There is a standard.
It is no different with truth. Truth is not relative. Either a woman is pregnant or she is not. Either a person is dead or he is not. Either you handed the cashier a fifty or you did not. And either 2 + 2 is 4 or it is not.
On this religion and spirituality board, we can cite to the scriptures. At John 17:17, Christ plainly said of his Father: "Your word is truth."

No. Certain things are true regardless of when, where, who, etc. are involved.
I would put the existence of the Creator in this category ... a.k.a. God.
