Ok, here are the perimeters. No religious books per se. I know you think the Bible, the Quaran, the gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster ect hold all truth, so there is no point in listing those. I want from 1 to 5 books. I will start with one, "Cat's Cradle" by Kurt Vonnegut. The books dont have to be fiction. I am asking because I think this can give us insight into each other.

Animal Farm
Mein Kampf
Some of the selected works of Mao
Wage Labor and Capital/ Value Price and Profit by Karl Marx
Foundations of Leninism by Joseph Stalin
The State and Revolution by V.I. Lenin
I think if people read these types of things they would see more clearly where many of our current political ideas and problems originated and would be far less apathetic. Maybe then we could learn to stop arguing over ideological differences so we can work together with our philosophical similarities, especially since most of us of any belief love freedom.

Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk
Walden by Henry David Thoreau
Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut
The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene
The Sportswriter, Independence Day, and The Lay of the Land by Richard Ford.

Granted, that's seven, but the last three are a series.

None come to mind, because people will resent being "required" to read a specific book.

BTW, the Bible is by far the best selling book of all time, and would be on the annual best seller's list if it wasn't excluded. You really can't understand Western culture without being informed about what the Bible teaches.

I infer from your question that you are a skeptic, or at least indifferent to Christianity. I would recommend something like, "Now That's a Good Question" by R.C. Sproul.

And one REALLY funny:
The Big Over Easy - Jasper Fforde.

GOD made you free. You can read any book you want.

It is possible to read all of GOD's Word without ever opening the Bible. This is because it is the most loved, copied, and quoted book. It is possible to compile and entire New Testament from extant letters that pastors wrote in the second and third century.

Despite your insistence on "no religious book", humanity has chosen the Bible hands down because it is the most read book. To this day, the Bible is ALWAYS the number one best seller. It is true every year, but usually not reported correctly by the media. Every year the Bible outsells every other book.

The answer to your question is obvious.

The Bible.

I also think that "dark blue: color me lonely" by Melody Carlson is an AWESOME book. All of Melody's books are amazing. They are more for teenage girls than guys. But they are definitely my favorite!
