I'd really like to get a puppy but I'm not sure I could give it the attention it needs and deserves. My sister is at home half of the day but I'm away for about 8 hours.
How do most people that work and have dogs manage? What do you do to keep your dog occupied during the day?

I do have all evenings and weekends free I might add.
And no, I think "recommend against" is correct grammar.

If your sister is home half the day while you are gone, and she is willing to work, it shouldn't be much of an issue. The problem is that a puppy needs to go out on a regular basis to learn how to potty train, needs three meals a day, etc.
I have a dog, but my bf is home during the day to take her out, take her for walks, plays with her in the house and takes her wherever he goes for car rides. To keep her occupied have lots for the dog to chew on! Bones, kongs among others are really important so they can expel energy and avoid having htem chew your stuff.
Overall, it is a big investment in time and financially, so make sure that you are willing to invest it.

Last time I checked there were more than 16 hours in a day (gone for 8, home for 8?)
anyway I got a chihuahua puppy and I work at least 9 hours a day but my schedule is always changing so sometimes I work nights and am off during the week and on nights and weekends my roomate is home...
it seems to work out ok, I just give him lots of toys and chew-toys and he has a potty pad in his "room" so he isn't really housetrained in the sense that he doesn't get walked regularly. But when I am home we go on walks and spend a lot of time together and my boyfriend will watch him on occasion. Sure, he misses me while I'm gone but he doesn't seem mal-adjusted at all.

A dog would be fine but puppies need to go out every hour or two. I would reccomend going to a shelter and getting a dog that is about a year old and already housetrained. This way you will be helping a dog that is in need of a home, you will be getting a dog that is already housebroken, and you will be getting a dog that is still young enough to train easily. This is what I did and it worked out perfectly. He chewed things for about 6 months, but after that he was always perfect when I was at work.

Hi,
I have three dogs and we are doing fine. First of all you have to ask yourself Do I really want a dog and why? For company or a friend. When you come home are you going to spend a lot of quality time training your baby.I have trained mine in crates and they listen to the radio when I go out. At least you sister is there if she would want to take half the responsibility of your new baby. Do you have the room for the pup and a yard for it to get some exercise too. There is training to do as a pup to go out and to be able to hold himself till you come home. Good luck and Hope I helped you.

No I wouldnt get a puppy if I worked most of the day. It wouldnt be fair on the puppy. Furthermore do you want the puppy to love and like your sister more than you. If she is going to be the person who looks and spends time with it the most, the puppy will lean more to her as its owner. Maybe you should consider getting a puppy or better yet a cat on the holiday, you will bond better with it. Dont rush it, you could regret it. Good luck!

Definately not.It is unnatural for dogs to be on their own. If you are away for 8 hours what happens in the 8 hours you are home? You will be asleep for at least 6 of those. That leaves you with 2 hours with a dog. Walking the dog takes an hour. You have to have your own free time too! Its just not practicle to have a dog if your work full time.

i guess its ok if your sisters at home half of the day. You could give your dog toys or you could get another dog for him/her to play with.

It is possible if your sister is home part of the day while you are at work. A cat is easier to care for, because it has a kitty litter box. ...
