First, make sure Win Media Player is installed correctly on your PC. Double click My Computer. Double Click the Drive and path/folder where your music or videos are stored. Right click onto any track/video. Click The Following Options:- OPEN WITH, Open With, Select the program from a list, OK, Windows Media Player, Always use the selected program to open this kind of file. This should do it, asuming you are using Windows XP. Unfortunately you did not tell us which Operating System you are using.

Whenever you go to open any sort of media, the computer will prompt you to 'tell it' what programme do you want to use to open it.
I.e., the pop-up will suggest 'Real Player' as a default, but you will also get a 'Browse' option which you can use to allocate another programme you want as you default media player.

Btw, if you ever experience problems in opening any kind of files, try downloading (free, just Google it up) the VLC media player - it doesn't need a million and one codec, and works like a dream.

Askmike is right, select all the file types and it will then automatically always use WMP. If you use Winamp or similar try not to run it after this as it will then change all the settings to make Winamp the default player. I deleted all the other players on my PC as for once I'm getting on with WMP.

right-click on some media-file select "Open with.." , find the MediaPLayer from the list and select a check: "Always use this program...". Done.
The same should be done for any media-type that you want to be open with MediaPLayer by default. mp3, wav, avi, ..etc.
