I live in a first floor flat and the living room of the flat below is directly underneath my bedroom, which means I can hear the bastards' TV when they decide to whack it on at 11pm. I'm thinking about getting some kind of sound proofing installed in the floor but know nothing about what options there are and how much they might cost. Any suggestions?

Hi UK builder here, there are many types of products for sound insulation dependent on how far you want to go and how much money you wish to spend. If you go for insulation in the floor void with acoustic properties this is fairly cheap but be aware that the sound still travels through the joists.
In new build flats the building regs have meant that the floors float and the joists are wrapped .
You can buy acoustic underlay and mats but these are expensive, but you save on the labour. You really need to get some guys in to explain the benefits of each and get prices. you do not have to use these guys, but take the advice.

When I had my piano in my bedroom as a kid. My mom and dad bought this stuff called black board. See if they still make it . They have better technology now so I'm sure there is something out there for you.

put a new floor down but before put a sound proofing mat under it. it might make the floor rise another inch but sometimes its worth it.
