I am due to have I-131 treatment in 8 wks. What are the precautions I need to take with regards to daily living after I am discharged from the hospital?

I had this treatment in the uk a year ago. I had to sign that i wouldnt go into public shopping mall, cinema etc for 4 weeks. I also had to have four weeks off my work as i couldnt guarantee anyone i came into contact with could be pregnant. If you live with someone you cant share a bed for the first week, and your contact should be limited to less than an hour sitting together.
All in all its not sore, you will feel fine the whole time, just frustrated that you cant really go anywhere!! I had all this time off and wasnt allowed to go anywhere busy, but i felt totally fine!

It depends on the dosage that you will be given. After ablation (when you've had your thyroidectomy) you will be exceedingly radioactive. I couldn't come within 5 feet of my family or anyone else for 8 days. I could not touch their food (or use the same restroom). Anything I touched or wore had to be put in black plastic bags outside and left for 2 weeks .
This year I has a smaller amount prior to a full body scan. I couldn't touch anyone til after my scan - 3 days. I wasn't allowed near old people, babies or pregnant women. I could go about my business without really worrying! Funny thing was, I went to the store right after swallowing the i 131. and the ATM machine freaked out!! It wouldn't work unless I moved far away from it! You'll feel awfully isolated not touching for so long, but you won't be endangering the lives of those you love if you are really careful!
