Ripping a dvd means copying the digital information to another source, usually a hard drive. DVDs have copy protection on them, so you can't just stick it a computer and copy the files. You have to use programs to bypass the protection, hence the forceful term "ripping". The word is used similar to "ripping the sticker off the front of the dvd case."

If you are asking about a video dvd rip;
A normal dvd movie which is about 4GB+ comes to less than 1GB when its ripped. These days, all pirated movies available on the internet are these DVD Rips in either DivX or Xvid

you can rip a DVD to your computer or you can rip a DVD to a blank DVD or copy if you like all you need is the right software i use alcohol 120% to rip DVDs and turn them into ISO files that can play from my PC with daemon tools a virtual DVD drive but you can also copy to DVD with DVD shrink

It means taking the contents and converting it into a another format such as mpg, avi the same term applies to a cd where you've stripped the contents and converted it to Mp3's and then stored the contents on your computer
