The main objective of the founders was to prevent new wars.

If you are a national from one of the member state, you can settle in any member state without any more paper work than the nationals of the state you are settling in.

If you are not a national of one of the member state, there is still a difficulty depending if the visa you get is from a member state that signed the shengen accord or not. Free circulation is not yet accepted for the non shengen countries.

Well, why not have an EU? I mean, ammerica has it's United States right? There are several advantages of this including trade, currency (which i admit not all eu members have taken to), and so on. I'm not sure, but it may make moving abroad easier. (I'd imagine ther'd still be paper work, just not as much).
