My mother was born with a hair lip and left pallete and has been receiving dentistry treatment throughouot her life for complications cause by the cleft pallet. To receive this treatment she goes to the local dentist hospital but she is always given a student doctor and is often used as a case study which she hates!! Are there any private dentists in the UK (preferably the South West) who have experience with cleft pallet and how do i find them?

There are lots of different sorts of people receiving training in a teaching hospital, including undergraduates (training to be doctors or dentists) and postgraduate trainees (training to be hospital specialists or consultants). There are also often trainee nurses, physios etc etc. If your mother has an unusual condition, she is likely to receive the best treatment in this type of environment, but the cost is the potential for being used as 'teaching material'. There have been changes in the law within the last couple of years covering the 'use' of patients and the information about them for training. In fact, for any information (including photos, where the person can be identified) express written consent is required.
Anybody who is a patient at a teaching hospital can request that they are not used as 'teaching material' for undergraduate medical or dental students. There should be forms that she can complete when she next attends.
Your mother can also write to her consultant / dentist in advance requesting that she has treatment from fully-trained / qualified doctors and dentists only, that she does not wish to be used as a case example and that she would prefer to see consultants only. Hopefully they will be able to respect her wishes over the last of these requests, but unfortunately 'trainee' doctors carry out a significant portion of the NHS workload because of the lack of funded consultant posts.
