E.g. The car is priced at £5,000 and I only have £4,000.

Any hints or tips for negotiating the price down and getting me a bargain??

1.Go to another dealer and get a comparison-play them off against eachother

2.Buy top gear mag, it's got all the prices you should aim for next to the full retail price

3.Find an alternative car even if you dont want it to threaten them with i.e if you're after a golf, tell them about a focus you're "looking at"

Best go to an Auction.

that £5k car most likely cost about £3.5k - £3.8k..

spend the savings at the auction on 'touching up',
just make sure its got No Oil leaks, 4 wheels and Wierd noises Ect.....You'll know when it's not right, go along a few times and you'll get a feel on how things work.

i have 2 cars a Nice Car and a CHARIOT! I NEVER aim to pay more than £600 for my runaround chariot for shopping at TESCOS. i keep them for a year then sell them on for £500. Cheap motoring by any standards.

Hint...Identify who the BIG boys are, then try and match their bidding, cos they're the one who WON'T be buying SH1TE!

Car dealers dont have the margins they once did to negotiate anything like 20% off a cars value which you are asking. Try using your trade in as leverage but to be honest I'd not even entertain you as a genuine buyer if you started talking figures like that.

Don't say I've only got 4k make an offer near to your for 4k and at every stage of your haggling wait for the sales man to speak first, when he goes off to speak to his "manager" he's probably just leaving you to stew for a bit when he comes back wait for him to speak.remember he will want a sale not at any cost but he will want to do a deal,if hes not going to budge them ask for 6 months road tax,a tank of petrol, anything to keep the pressure on.
Have fun,good luck ;0)
